Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Lead Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider, you will support the delivery of high-quality neurosurgical care to inpatients, including pre- and post-operative management.

Every day, you will function as the clinical and operational leader of the neurosurgery APP team and collaborate closely with neurosurgeons, nursing, and hospital administration to promote clinical excellence, continuity, and efficiency. Your role includes oversight of APP workflows, onboarding, scheduling, coordination of education and training, and participation in quality and safety initiatives.

To be successful in your role, you will strategically lead and optimize the delivery of high-quality neurosurgical care for inpatients, encompassing pre- and post-operative management. You will demonstrate exceptional leadership in overseeing APP workflows, fostering clinical excellence, ensuring continuity and efficiency, and collaborating seamlessly with neurosurgeons, nursing, and hospital administration to drive quality and safety initiatives.

  • Obtain medical histories when necessary.
  • Perform physical exams (within established protocol).
  • Diagnose, treat and monitor acute and chronic diseases (within protocol guidelines).
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
  • Prescribe or recommend medications for prescription for medications and treatment (within protocol guidelines).
  • Responds to emergency situations in an appropriate manner.
  • Promote positive lifestyle habits to all patients through education and counseling.
  • Maintain patient’s privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assist doctors with phone coverage and hospital rounds.
  • Work closely with other nurses to assure patient flow is efficient.
  • Support discharge planning and care coordination.
  • Consult with the supervising doctor regarding patient symptoms to assure proper diagnosis and plan of treatment.
  • Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
  • Conduct relevant research.
  • Participate in unit rounds as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement.
  • Attends meetings as requested.

Job Requirements

Required

  • Masters of Science Nursing and Minimum of 3 years’ experience as an APP in acute care setting in neurosurgery or surgical inpatient care, upon hire or Masters of Science Physician Assistant and Minimum of 3 years’ experience as an APP in acute care setting in neurosurgery or surgical inpatient care, upon hire
  • Advanced Practitioner Registered Nurse: TN, upon hire or Physician Assistant: TN, upon hire
  • AHA BLS and ACLS
  • Drug Enforcement Administration-Control Sub Reg Cert: TN, upon hire

Preferred

  • Experience with trauma, ICU, and post-op neurosurgical patients
  • Prior experience precepting or mentoring APPs
